A complete foot evaluation is needed when evaluating a patient for hammertoe deformities. The foot should be examined in both weight bearing (with the patient standing upright) and non-weight bearing positions to determine if the deformity is flexible. When a deformity is found to be rigid on physical exam, it most likely involves changes in the bone structure. These types of deformities may require more aggressive medical or surgical care. Top of foot pain is a general term that is used to describe a pain in the top surface of the foot. Top of foot pain is a sharp pain that can be found on the top surface of the foot near the second toe. There are times when the pain can be found around the 3rd and 4th metatarsal. This deformity is typically caused by ill-fitting shoes or poor muscle coordination. When shoes are to blame, it is typically the fault of shoes that have a narrow toe area or high heels. Sometimes other foot conditions such as flat feet and bunions can contribute to the hammer toe deformity.

When pressure is transferred to the ball of the foot and the toes, the pressure on the sesamoid bones is greatly reduced, and so is the pain. A slight variation of the exercise above, for this one, lift all your toes off the ground all at once, then bring them down one by one, starting from the outermost toe till the innermost big toe. Friedreich’s Ataxia is caused by an abnormality in one of the genes called X25. This gene is located in the ninth chromosome pair. This occurs when there is a lack of a protein called fataxin in the tissues. This lack of protein causes a degeneration of the nerve cells within the tissues of the spinal cord and its brain connections, the heart and the pancreas. This reduces the nerve signals to the muscles. Friedreich’s Ataxia develops when a defective gene is inherited from both parents. This is called a recessive inheritance pattern. One out of one hundred people are carriers.
